Measurements are made against the Cloudflare global edge network for accuracy anywhere in the world.

What do your speed test results mean?

Three numbers tell the story of your connection — here is what each one means for everyday use.

Download speed

How fast you pull data from the internet, in megabits per second (Mbps). It drives video streaming, web browsing, app downloads and file transfers. For most households, download is the number that matters most.

Upload speed

How fast you send data out — video calls, cloud backups, live streaming and sharing files. ADSL plans often have slow upload, while fiber is usually symmetric (equal up and down).

Ping & jitter

Ping is reaction time in milliseconds — critical for online gaming and calls. Jitter measures how much that time varies; low jitter means a stable, smooth connection.

A speed test for every connection

However you connect, our tool measures it — and here is what typical results look like.

WiFi speed test

Testing over WiFi? Expect 20–60% lower results than wired due to radio interference, distance and router overhead. Sit in the same room as your router on the 5 GHz band for your best WiFi numbers.

4G speed test

4G LTE typically delivers 10–50 Mbps down and 5–20 Mbps up. Stay still while testing, check your signal bars, and pause background apps — moving between towers can swing results a lot.

5G speed test

5G regularly hits 100–1000 Mbps — faster than many home lines. Mid-band gives the best balance; mmWave needs line of sight. Test near a window for your true 5G peak.

ADSL and fiber speed test

ADSL tops out around 10–20 Mbps down with just 1–2 Mbps up. Fiber starts at 100 Mbps and often reaches 1–8 Gbps, symmetric. A fast test shows exactly which one your line delivers.

Check broadband speed

Any always-on connection — cable, DSL, fiber or fixed wireless — counts as broadband. Run this test at different times of day to catch evening congestion your provider won't tell you about.

Fast test, anywhere

The whole test finishes in about 25 seconds and works on any device with a browser — phone, tablet, laptop, smart TV. Bookmark this page and re-test after every router or plan change.

How this internet speed test works

No plugins, no apps — just your browser and honest measurement methodology.

Find the nearest edge server

Your browser connects to the closest point on Cloudflare's network covering 300+ cities, so distance never skews your results.

Measure download & upload

Several parallel streams download and upload data for ~10 seconds each. We exclude the connection ramp-up and average a stable window — the way professionals do.

Report speed, ping & jitter

Latency is measured on every request with sub-millisecond precision, then we summarise everything into simple, shareable numbers.

Tips for an accurate speed test

Follow these before pressing start and your numbers will be trustworthy.

Use a wired connection if possible — ethernet removes WiFi as a variable entirely.

Close streaming, downloads and cloud sync on all devices sharing your network.

Disable VPNs and proxies — they reroute traffic and usually lower speeds.

Run the test 2–3 times at different hours and compare the averages.

Reboot your router before testing if speeds look lower than usual.

Keep your browser tab focused — background tabs can throttle the test.

Speed test FAQ

Everything people ask before and after running the test.

Is this internet speed test really free?
Yes. CheckInternetSpeedTest.com is 100% free and unlimited. There is no account to create, no app to install and no hidden paywall — open the page and press Start.
How does the speed test work?
Your browser opens several parallel connections to Cloudflare's global edge network, downloads and uploads streams of data, and measures how many megabits per second travel through your connection, plus latency (ping) and jitter.
Why is my WiFi speed test result lower than my internet plan?
WiFi adds overhead and is affected by distance, walls and interference, so results are often 20–60% lower than a wired connection. For numbers closest to your plan, test with an ethernet cable.
What is ping and what is a good latency?
Ping (latency) is how long a small packet takes to reach a server and come back, measured in milliseconds. Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is good for gaming and video calls, and above 80 ms connections start to feel laggy.
What is a good download speed?
It depends on what you do: 5–10 Mbps is enough for HD streaming, 25 Mbps or more for 4K, 10–20 Mbps for smooth video calls, and 50 Mbps or more for busy households with several users.
Does this speed test work on 4G and 5G mobile connections?
Yes. The test works on any connection — WiFi, 4G, 5G, ADSL, cable, fiber or satellite. For mobile tests, stay in one spot, move near a window and pause VPNs or ongoing downloads.
Why do I get different results each time?
Real-world speeds fluctuate with network congestion, time of day, other devices using your connection and router load. Running the test two or three times and averaging the results gives the truest picture.
Is my data private when I run a test?
We do not store your results on a server and we use no ads or tracking cookies. Results are kept only in your browser. The test exchanges traffic with Cloudflare's speed servers, which see your IP address as any internet connection does.
